In Memory of Rahmat Noor Hussain

For the people who served along him in Chitral Scouts as seniors and juniors, he was a Subidar par excellence even after his retirement. For many others in society he was known to be a headman, mediator, head of delegation, representative and spokesperson of populace. And the family circle had well entitled him as Zhan Lali. He started, without formal education, to prove himself in public leadership and selfless service to people. He held no position of power but the respect and legacy he left behind remains unrivaled in his time.

Mr Rahmat Noor Hussain was born in village Charun Romandur in 1934. He was the eldest among six children of Musa Noor Khan. Other siblings are Muhammad Hashim Khan, former polo player, and Rahmat Ghazi, former secretary and PTI leader, and three sisters.

He had joined Chitral Scouts in September 1949 and retired in Subidar rank in November, 1976. After retirement from service, he started his services for society.

His role in family building, support and relationships particularly the networking remains as potential aspect of his personality in societal leadership. He had developed a culture rich in openness and frankness at home, agility and audacity outside the hamlet into the society.

On the basis of social constructions he made no difference among the people in society. His attachment with society can be gauged by the respect he earned and the support he received. The contributions and services he paid were the consequence of the concern he felt for the people and the area. He had a certain urge to be of use to people in general, and represented them with grace and magnanimity. Entire Charun was like home to him and the areas in its vicinity as neighborhood. On the occasion of both happiness and grief he was essentially seen hosting guests at every home in Charun and with equal fervor he did away with both rituals.

For many, being down to earth was natural to him, and for others it was the nurture. He was found adept to different situations, public dealings and negotiating matters whenever taken to him and he led for resolution.

He never made a stint in politics knowing well about his following, and interestingly he served as chairman of Khidmat Committee during Pervez Musharaf regime.

Zhan Lali passed away on January 06, 2023 in Peshawar after longer than a week of illness, and embarked on his journey from this mortal world towards his eternal abode. He left many examples of indiscriminate care and selfless services behind. With his departure there remains a leadership vacuum in the area and a void unfilled by a loving father. His absence in our midst shall be acutely felt whenever the occasions so happen where he used to represent, negotiate, mediate and speak for the people in his home town and its locality.

May the departed soul rest in eternal peace
