CHITRAL: The dread of coronavirus is likely to cancel a number of cultural events and festivals in Chitral scheduled to held during the coming three months including the famous spring festival of Kalash people.
The celebrations of binisik is held in the mountainous valleys of both upper and lower parts of Chitral where crops of wheat and barley are sown in the spring season and the farmers make festivities on this occasion which continued for two to three days.
As per information reaching here from the valleys of Karimabad, Arkari, Gobor in lower Chitral and Terich , Rech, Khot and Yarkhoon in upper Chitral, no such events were held as the terrified peasants started cultivating when the melting down of snow which usually started with extravaganza.
Last week, the residents of Lot Koh and Biyar valleys cancelled the celebrations of Nauroze which used to be held with great pomp and show to evade the assemblage of people which risked their infection with the deadly virus.
The centuries-old Kagh Lusht festival in Upper Chitral is held regularly in the vast plateau of Kagh Lusht which turns lush green with the melting down of snow festooned by a wide variety of wild flowers.
The former rulers in the 18th and 19th centuries have been holding festivals in this field to accord welcome to the spring season after the tough and rough winter season extending to four months and even today, the people of all age wait eagerly for the festival.
Zaman Baig Laal of Booni, one of the managers of the event last year, told Chitral Times by telephone that the festival will not be held this year as the horror of coronvirus has put the people at high alert who avoided such places of rush.
He said that the district administration has also imposed ban on all types of festivals and sports events in the wake of corornavirus for a period of one month after which it will not be possible to hold the Kagh Lusht festival as the weather will be too hot to hold it.
Although the Chilim Jusht festival of Kalash people is held in all the three valleys Bumburate, Birir and Rumbur in the month of May but the people will still avoid celebrating it even if the dread of coronavirus is no more.
The Kalash people said that the preparations for the festival started from the month of April which ranged from the purchase of cloths to the renovation of their homes and the dancing places and during this month (April) this year, they will remain confined to their homes and remain isolated from each others.
