Pakistani Nation as an Emblem of Perpetual Oblivion – By: Hussain Ameen
The Pakistani nation stands as a monument to perpetual oblivion from the very inception of Pakistan as a sovereign state to this day, not a single instance can be cited to prove that its people possess genuine awakening, an awareness of their rights, or the consciousness to reclaim them.
Yet, history bears undeniable witness that in no corner of the world have rights ever been granted without an outcry. Sadly, the Pakistani nation has remained forever oblivious and detached, silently watching its own rights being trampled upon.
No nation can attain social, economic, and political freedom until it awakens to its own plight and stands vigilant. For democracy to thrive, the unyielding vigilance of the public is an absolute prerequisite.
The ultimate vanguard of social, economic, and political liberty resides within the spirit of the masses and their burning desire for freedom. No political, judicial, or constitutional mechanism can deliver true freedom to a nation unless it collectively yearns to be free. A people must not only cherish liberty but must also stand eternally prepared to resist and crush any attempt aimed at their subjugation.
As Judge Learned Hand profoundly remarked, _”Liberty lies in the hearts of men and women; when it dies there, no constitution, no law, no court can even do much to help it.”_
It is rightly said that ‘Eternal vigilance is the price of liberty.’ Citizens must remain forever watchful. They must never bow their heads in silent submission when their fundamental rights are arbitrarily infringed upon. Habits such as lethargy, apathy toward public affairs, ignorance of governance, selfishness, a lack of civic sense, and blind obedience erode a people’s desire for freedom, ultimately leading to its demise.
Allama Iqbal (R.A.) identified the root cause of this profound slumber as the deep-seated habit of servitude and the death of self-hood (Khudi). In his view, the tragedy is not merely that we have suffered immense loss; the true catastrophe is that the very collective sense of loss has vanished from our hearts, and we have accepted injustice as an ordinary routine of our daily lives.
وائ ناکامی! متاعِ کارواں جاتا رہا ۔
کارواں کے دل سے احساس زیاں جاتا رہا ۔
The greatest catalyst for this national oblivion is our deep-seated internal division. The great sociologist Ibn Khaldun wrote that when a society loses its Asabiyyah- (collective solidarity and social cohesion), that nation is doomed to perish. Today, Pakistan stands fractured along the lines of language, provinces, sects, ethnicities, and political factions. This fragmentation has been worsened by modern media, which acts as an engine for psychological engineering, mind control, and the systematic denial of access to absolute truths. Consequently, we have fallen into a state of moral decay so deep that when one brave soul raises a voice for their rightful dues, others merely mock and ridicule their struggle.
