    Business conference for women entrepreneurs in Chitral held

    CHITRAL: In the business conference for women entrepreneurs in Chitral held here on Saturday, the speakers stressed the need of full scale participation of women in the economic and business activities who formed 53 percent of the population of Chitral as evident from the results of the census held last year.


    Held under the aegis of Chitral chamber of commerce and Chitral Community Development Network in a local hotel, the conference was largely attended by the women folk engaged in business activities, women rights activists, bankers and the officers of district administration.


    The president of Chitral Chamber of Commerce, Sartaj Ahmed Khan, Additional DC Minhasuddin, gender development manager in AKRSP, Razia Sultana and others highlighted the issues, opportunities and prospective of women entrepreneurship in Chitral with special reference to the environment after the completion of Lowari tunnel.


    They said that women folk can no more be keep aloof from the mainstream society any more in the conservative society of Chitral and it was the time to provide them with an opportunity to express themselves in different walks of life.


    They said that women folk enjoyed emancipation to a greater degree in Chitral in the arena of education and politics as there was no taboo on educating the women in colleges and universities while not a single case of preventing the voting of women has ever been reported from any part of the district.


    The speakers said that the ideal situation of peace and tranquility in Chitral provided highly congenial atmosphere for women entrepreneurship in Chitral where women folks are held in high esteem as a part of culture and tradition.


    They, however, said that no compromise the people of Chitral can make in the social bonds and traditions in vogue about the status of women who cannot tolerate any departure from it and those in the entrepreneurship should clearly discern the social contours.


    The additional DC Chitral Minhasuddin put forward the blueprint of the establishment of women-specific shopping mall in the midst of city and said that this market will be first of its kind not only in the province but the whole country where no male can make entry.


    He said that women folk can have all kinds of facilities under the same roof while their number will be increased with the passage of time by ascertaining their requirements in different fields of life.


    He said that with the completion of Golen Gol hydro power station, the issue of electricity has been solved in Chitral once and for all and this will greatly help promote the cottage industry in particular and women entrepreneurship in general.


    The bankers, present on the occasion, announced on behalf of their respective banks to open separate counters for women and provide them interest free loans to embark upon business.


    Some of the women speakers demanded of the government to open a branch of First Women Bank inside the women’s market in Chitral.
