KP Assembly demands arrest of killers of Maulana Idris Shaheed

PESHAWAR (APP): Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly unanimously passed a condemnation resolution against the brutal killing of Maulana Muhammad Idris in Charsadda, demanding the immediate arrest of those involved and strict punishment for the perpetrators.

Presenting the resolution, Adnan Khan of Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam said that the House strongly condemned the murder of the prominent religious scholar, former MPA, provincial patron of JUI, and member of the party’s central consultative council, Sheikh-ul-Hadith Maulana Muhammad Idris.

The resolution called on the provincial government to immediately arrest the accused, punish them according to the law, and take effective measures to prevent such incidents in the future.

During the session, JUI members brought pictures of the slain Maulana Idris into the assembly hall.

Speaking during the debate, Adnan Khan said that although discussions, jirgas, and committees had repeatedly been formed regarding the law-and-order situation in the province, no practical measures were visible.

Referring to the Bannu incident, he called it a major question mark on security, saying that armed men operated throughout the night without any effective response. He added that after evening hours, the writ of the government was no longer visible in the province, and if the situation continued, collective resignations might also be considered.

Government member Sajjad Barakwal said that the entire nation, provincial government, and all political parties were saddened by Maulana Idris’s murder. He said the region had continuously suffered from unrest, and anyone speaking for their rights remained at risk.

According to him, questioning peace and security is every citizen’s right, and realistic dialogue is necessary to resolve the issues.

Pakistan Muslim League (N) member Sobia Shahid said that a negative campaign had been run against Maulana Idris on social media.

She blamed the provincial government for the deteriorating law-and-order situation.

Awami National Party parliamentary leader Arbab Usman questioned why the situation was worsening again if terrorism had previously been claimed to be eliminated.

He raised concerns about governance, accountability, and the security situation in the province.

Provincial Minister Dr. Amjad Khan said that Maulana Muhammad Idris was a non-controversial and moderate personality who always preached peace, brotherhood, and unity. He said that anyone speaking for peace was being targeted, and that both the federal and provincial governments needed to adopt a joint strategy to eliminate terrorism.

JUI parliamentary leader Lutfur Rahman said that the ongoing targeted killings of religious scholars and political leaders were alarming, and that the provincial government had so far failed to present an effective plan for maintaining law and order.

He demanded an immediate meeting of the security committee so that decisions could be made based on facts.

Earlier, the session of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly was held on Monday under the chairmanship of Deputy Speaker Suraiya Bibi. After the recitation of the Holy Quran and the national anthem, prayers were offered in the assembly for the victims of the Bannu incident and for Maulana Muhammad Idris.

Later, after the approval of two bills, the remaining agenda was suspended and a detailed discussion on the law-and-order situation was held.
