Unnecessary referral puts burden on big hospitals: CM told cabinet

PESHAWAR (APP): Chief Minister Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Muhammad Sohail Afridi has directed the relevant quarters to accelerate the pace of work on reform initiatives in the health sector in view of the increasing burden on major hospitals and the difficulties faced by the public.

He emphasized that instead of temporary firefighting measures, a comprehensive and sustainable strategy must be adopted to ensure long term improvements in public health.

The Chief Minister issued these directives while chairing an important meeting on the health sector at the Chief Minister’s Secretariat in Peshawar. He instructed that the revamping of primary and secondary level hospitals should be expedited to reduce the load on tertiary care hospitals, stressing that the provision of quality healthcare facilities at the grassroots level is indispensable.

He also ordered discouragement of unnecessary referrals, noting that such practices not only create hardships for patients but also increase pressure on major hospitals.
