For students of International Relations, the picture of the earth, as an abode for humankind is a gloomy one. Relative presence of hegemonic power play with a biased self-will keeps dominating both in history and in contemporary state of affairs. The future is not an exception to it. Even a worst picture can be foreseen in the post corona era. Humans seem destined to face a growth in suppressions, atrocities and irrelevance both in economic and social sector.
At present international community has failed in resolving humanitarian crisis. Ignorance of human sufferings has become a growing trend among international communities. Conventions, protocols, agreements and resolutions have been and still being continually signed but compliance to them and enforcement of them are no one’s business. Even the UNO has become an ineffective platform. Economic goals and political scores, have totally blurred, the very sense of human supremacy. The result is the worst human sufferings. The story goes evenly, from the holocaust of Jews and the tyrannies against the Blacks, to the atrocity crimes against Muslims. Besides the modern hegemonic claims of liberalism and secular preponderance, Muslim world has been turned into the gloomiest of its history.
Syrian Muslims after long day’s observation of fast, are compelled to take Iftari, sitting amidst the scattered debris of destructed buildings, in their war-torn country, as they lack the basic right of shelter. The noble laureate, Aung Sang Sui Kui, herself supervised atrocity crimes against the weaker Ruhangyas in Myanmar. The Muslims in Palestine are forced out of their own land, subsequently marginalized, radicalized and compelled for extreme reactions. About half a Billion Muslims are being maltreated and threatened, in the world largest democracy of Moodified India. Under India’s cruel military hands, the Muslims in the Indian occupied Kashmir, are undergoing the worst atrocity crimes of human history. The land has been turned into an open jail, demography is being changed and persecution of leaders and people is soaring high with every dawn. Mass murders, gang rapes, abductions, child abuses and worst are the news from Kashmir.
The most heart wrenching than all of these, is the world’s response. United Nations, International organizations and human right watch dogs are turning deaf ears, to the violent shrieks of humans in these states and pretending ignorance of them. They are senseless, maybe because they think they have done their jobs. As they have compiled United Nations’ UNIVERSAL CHARTER OF HUMAN RIGHTS, which entitles every individual human being with the right of a promise land. They have signed, Conventions on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crimes of Genocides in 1948. They have agreed to the Geneva Convention of 1949 and its subsequent Protocols in 1972. They have promised to safeguard Refugee Rights in 1951 and they have determined themselves for the compliance to the historically celebrated Responsibility to Protect (R2P) in 2005. Under R2P states were held responsible, to protect their own citizens, from atrocity crimes. They were responsible to encourage and help states fighting against atrocity crimes. They were kept responsible to respond in a collective, timely and decisive manner, under UN aegis, when a state manifestly fails, in protecting its people, from atrocity crimes.
Having made the above mentioned and more other commitments to human causes, the world community still is not willing, responsible and worried about ensuring and execution of its own promises. Political favors have been more important to the dominant states than their undertakings. Self-interest has become more convincing than collective welfare. Material gains worth more than human lives. They had only lied to the world. They were kidding what the suppressed humans took serious. The following lines from a song by Franz Felix of Austria best describe their said attitude.
Last night I had the strangest dream I ever dreamed before
I dreamed the world had all agreed to put an end to war.I dreamed I saw a mighty room, the room was filled with men.And the paper they were signing said they’d never fight again. And when the papers all were signed and a million copies madeThey all joined hands and bowed their heads and grateful prayers were prayedAnd the people in the streets below were dancing round and roundAnd Guns and swords and uniforms were scattered on the ground. The reality is this that human is a self-serving creature. It never hesitates in coloring its hands in the blood of others, for personal lust of wealth and honor. It has no moral inclinations. It can make the life on earth, only gloomy, poor, nasty, brutish and short. Hobbes was wrong in associating, a civilized social contract with humans. There is nothing like peaceful co-existence in humandom, except by compulsion. The world is basically dominated by anarchy and chaos, exposed to us, sometimes less and sometimes more. Because humans lack sense of humanity.
