Chitral Times Special Report
The traditional Shandur Polo Festival, played at the world’s highest polo ground, is more than just a sporting event. It is regarded as a symbol of the culture, history, and traditional rivalry between Chitral and Gilgit-Baltistan. For more than four decades, teams from both regions have competed fiercely to establish their supremacy in this historic contest.
According to records of Shandur finals played between 1982 and 2026, Chitral has won the coveted title 17 times, while Gilgit has secured 14 championships, giving Chitral an overall lead in the tournament’s history.
The records show that Gilgit won the inaugural title in 1982, while Chitral claimed its first Shandur crown in 1986. Since then, the two sides have produced numerous memorable and thrilling encounters that have helped bring international recognition to Shandur Polo.
Chitral emerged victorious in 1986, 1993, 1995, 1997, 2000, 2004, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2012, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2022, 2023, and 2025. Gilgit, meanwhile, won the title in 1982, 1989, 1990, 1991, 1992, 1994, 1996, 1998, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2005, 2011, and 2026.
In the most recent final in 2026, Gilgit defeated Chitral 6-5 in a hard-fought and exciting contest to reclaim the Shandur Polo Cup after a 15-year wait. Despite this victory, Chitral continues to maintain an overall lead in total titles won.
Among the many notable achievements in Shandur Polo history, the record for serving the longest tenure as team captain belongs to Shahzada Sikandar-ul-Mulk, who led Chitral for many years and played a significant role in the team’s success.
There were several years when the festival could not be held due to extraordinary circumstances. No match was played in 1999 because of the Kargil conflict. The festival was also affected by boycotts in 2010 and from 2013 to 2015. Likewise, the 2020 and 2021 editions were cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, while the event was not held in 2024 as well.
One of the most distinctive features of the Shandur Polo Festival is its unique style of “freestyle polo,” which combines speed, skill, and aggressive play. Every year, thousands of domestic and international tourists, sports enthusiasts, and culture lovers travel to Shandur to witness the spectacle.
Often described as the “Game of Kings and the King of Games,” polo holds the status of a national sport in both Chitral and Gilgit-Baltistan. It is the people of these regions who have kept this ancient tradition alive for generations. Polo is an expensive sport, with players spending hundreds of thousands of rupees annually on horse care, training, and other expenses. Yet their passion and commitment to the game remain undiminished.
There was a time when the future of polo in Chitral appeared uncertain, with only 13 teams participating in district-level tournaments. However, the combined efforts of local players, enthusiasts, and organizers breathed new life into the sport. This year, a record 63 teams took part in the Pre-Shandur Polo Tournament, a clear indication of the growing popularity and revival of polo in Chitral.
Sports experts believe that polo is not merely a game; it is a reflection of the cultural bonds, traditions, and historic ties shared by the people of Chitral and Gilgit-Baltistan. Every year, the festival creates new memories, celebrates regional heritage, and adds another chapter to the rich history of Shandur Polo.
