CHITRAL: President Chitral Polo Association Shahzada Sikandarul Mulk has said that Shandur Polo Festival will be held in more befitting manner from July 7 to 9 this year, while all the arrangement has been completed for the successful holding of Shandur Polo Festival. Talking to Chitral Times, he said that during the festival the whole shandur will be decorated and hopefully a TV Chanel will telecast live the events. He said that lovers of the game anxiously wait for the festival.
Para gliding, magic show, puppet show , musical chair for children and other colourful programme would be presented on the occasion. Sikandar said that Gilgit Polo teams will also participate in the festival, they will take part and they matches will be played among Chitral and Gilgit Baltistan teams.
It pertinent to mention here that first Shandur Polo Tournament was played in 1833. A British Political Agent Major Cobb, who had the polo ground at Shandur named after himself, organized the first tournament. He was fond of playing the game under the full moon. Since then polo in Shandur has been a tradition. The most spectacular polo of present times is played at the Shandur Top between Gilgit and Chitral teams every July at 12,250ft. above seal level, the splendor and glory of polo is an event not to be missed.
