I am writing to draw your kind attention to a tragic incident that occurred recently in Swat, where 18 precious lives were lost after being swept away by the river. Sadly, no emergency institution responded in time to rescue these individuals. This heartbreaking incident has once again highlighted the urgent need for a professional, trained, and rapid response disaster management team in the region.
The Aga Khan Agency for Habitat (AKAH) has earned great respect for its life-saving interventions during natural disasters and emergencies across Pakistan, especially in remote and high-risk areas. Your organization’s professionalism, preparedness, and commitment to saving lives are deeply appreciated.
Swat is a mountainous region with frequent floods, landslides, and other natural hazards. Unfortunately, there is currently no strong institutional presence to respond effectively during such emergencies. In this context, I strongly urge the leadership of AKAH to consider opening a dedicated office in Swat.
An AKAH office in Swat would not only enable rapid response during emergencies but also help in community-based disaster risk management, awareness, training, and sustainable development projects. The local population would feel safer and more supported knowing that an experienced and reliable institution like AKAH is present to protect lives and property.
We hope our humble request will be given due consideration in the larger interest of public safety and resilience-building in Swat.
