    New Guidelines on cleanliness on sustainable basis issued to all hospitals of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa

    Peshawar: On the directives of Provincial Health Minister Dr. Hisham Inamullah Khan, guidelines on cleanliness on sustainable basis issued to all hospitals of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa including merged districts for infection control and provision of clean safe care. Health minister also warned that if guidelines were not followed properly, they will take action against the concerned administration during their surprise visits.

    A letter issued from the office of Secretary Health Dr. Farooq Jameel to all hospital directors/medical superintendents of all categories of hospitals in KP, according to which health department envisages that health services be provided in a clean and safe environment that is fit for purpose and based on best practice. The newly developed KP health policy also emphasizes that patients have a right to be treated in a setting that meets the required levels of safety and quality.

    General cleaning practices need to be ensured in every hospital of the province round the clock for seven days a week. According to the guidelines floor, walls, ceilings, mirrors, doors and windows should be free of stains, visible dust, gross soil, spills, streaks and spider webs and hand prints. Collection, handling, washing and drying of laundry and bedding to be ensured as per standard procedures to ensure clean mattresses, pillows, sheets and blankets etc. similarly all horizontal surfaces are free of visible dust or streaks including furniture, window ledges, overhead lights, phones, picture frames and carpets etc.

    The hospitals were directed that bathroom fixtures including toilets, sinks, tubs and showers should be free of streaks, soil, strains and soap scum. Hospital administrations were instructed to ensure that dispensers were free of dust, soiling and residue and replaced/replenished when empty. Appliances are free of dust, soiling and stains. Hospital waste including sharps was disposed of appropriately as per standards. Items that are broken, torn, cracked or malfunctioning are replaced and disposed of appropriately.

    The hospitals were also instructed for to encourage tree plantation in whole of the province and considering the contribution of tree plantation to environmental health. In his message, health minister Dr. Hisham Inamullah Khan said that he himself and members of parliament being representative of public shall be inspecting the state of hospital cleanliness from now onwards on regular basis. He said government of KP intends to introduce health setting, hospital cleanliness as one of the key indicator in performance evaluation report of government officers of health department.

    It was also directed that performance appraisal of respective hospital incharge shall be made over these parameters and strict action shall be taken against officers not conforming to the directions.
