    Mental Health in youth

Mental Health in youth – By: Tasneem Hazrat

Mental health condition is worst in youth and most of the suicides are caused by mental health disorders. Depression is one of the leading cause of the disability. Suicide is the fourth leading cause of death among 15-29 years old. Many mental health conditions can be effectively treated at relatively low cost, yet the gap between people needing care and those with access to care remains substantial. Effective treatment coverage remains extremely low.

Pakistan is a thickly populated country with current population estimation of 229,418,782 (World Population 2022, 2022). For it, however, suicide as a health challenge is yet to be addressed seriously. Although it has the different sources of information of suicide, such as Media reports, police report and forensic reports, there is also a paucity of research and lack of literatures on the suicide of this vast segment of population. Suicide takes place owing to multidimensional factors such as genetics, social, psychological as well as cultural risk factors. It is because suicide is an under-researched subject in Pakistan until now. There was a research held in Pakistan which was the content analysis of suicide cases published in newspaper from 2021-2022 on suicide cases and the result was the suicide range of male 65% and female 35%. The age range from 15-30 had a suicide percentage of 58.82%.

Most of the people who have some sort of mental health issues likely do not concern any pscychriatist because of the society. They deny to get the psychological therapies because after that people call them mad. So the youth should be educated on mental health issues and try to prioritize their mental health.
