PESHAWAR: Chief Minister Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Mahmood Khan has directed the quarters concerned to take concrete steps to put Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Cities Improvement Project (KPCIP) on ground adding that all the pre-requisites including acquisition of land should immediately be completed in order to start physical work on all the sub schemes planned under the project. He made it clear that no delay would be tolerated in implementation of this important project; all the stakeholders should have to fulfill their responsibilities well in time to ensure physical progress on the project according to stipulated timelines. “Provision of improved municipal services and other civic facilities to citizens is one of the top priorities of the provincial government”, he said and added that all the projects being executed to this effect needed to be completed in time.
He was chairing a meeting to review progress made so far on Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Cities Improvement Project (KPCIP). Provincial Minister for local government Akbar Ayub, administrative secretaries of concerned departments and other relevant authorities attended the meeting. The meeting took a detailed review of the progress so far made on the project. It was informed that Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Cities Improvement Project is being launched with the financial assistance of Asian Development Bank in the five major cities of the province including Peshawar, Kohat, Abbottabad, Mardan and Swat. The purpose of the project is to improve the quality of the life of citizens through enhanced municipal infrastructure and strengthened institutional capacities of municipal setups in the selected cities. It was told that under the project, 23 sub-projects have been planned including provision of clean drinking water through replacement and construction of water supply network, development of green spaces, construction of sewerage system including new sewage treatment plant, solid waste management and other civic services. Detailed engineering design of the project has been submitted whereas tender documents were in progress.
The Chief Minister termed the project as an important initiative of the incumbent government and directed the quarters concerned to ensure visible progress on the project and complete all the requirements to ensure formal ground breaking of sub schemes under the project. Despite the tough financial situation and challenges, the government did not compromise on the welfare of people and launched a number of projects to this end, which on completion would help to raise the living standard of citizens, he added.
