    PESHAWAR: Chief Minister Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Mahmood Khan has termed education sector as one of the top priorities of his government and said that during the last eight years unprecedented reforms have been introduced in education sector which are yielding encouraging results with regard to enhance quality of education in public sector schools. He has said that provision of new furniture to public sector schools of the province is yet another important development to ensure the availability of missing facilities in these schools adding that more than 2.4 million students of public schools would be provided new furniture in two different phases with a total cost of Rs. 6 billion.

    Mahmood Khan has directed the officials of Elementary & Secondary Education Department to ensure the provision of new furniture to schools within the given time frame. He was addressing a function held in connection with the provision of new furniture to public sector schools here on Friday.

    Besides, Provincial Cabinet Members Shahram Khan Tarakai, Shah Muhammad Wazir, Anwar Zeb Khan and Wazir Zada, relevant government functionaries, students and media representatives attended the event.

    The Chief Minister has said that in view of the increasing demands of new schools and effectively address the issue of drop out, second shifts program has been introduced in feasible government schools and thousands of students have been enrolled in these schools under the second shifts program adding that teachers are being hired through parent teacher councils for second shift program. Mahmood Khan remarked that as promised, education card would soon be launched in the province to extend full support to the students of needy families for their education in highly reputed education institutions across the country. He termed the Single National Curriculum as revolutionary step of the incumbent government and said that it would help eliminate the difference between private and public sector schools, and enable the students of public sector schools to compete with the students of private sector schools. “Provision of monthly stipends for female students, E-transfer Policy, Smart Schools Program, legislation against heavy school bags, provision of missing facilities in schools, merit based hiring of thousands of teachers etc are the mile stone achievements of the provincial government to strengthen the education sector”, Mahmood Khan maintained.

    On this occasion the chief minister also directed the Higher Education Department to launch second shift program in all the feasible colleges of the province as well. He directed the Archaeological Department for necessary steps on priority basis for the restoration/renovation of the historic Government Shaheed Hasnain Sharif Higher Secondary School Peshawar to its original condition further directing the sports department to ensure the provision of all the required sports facilities in the schools. Addressing the function, Provincial Minister for Elementary & Secondary Education Shahram Khan Tarakai highlighted the reforms initiatives of the provincial government for strengthening the education sector.
