Heavy rain lashes Peshawar, adjoining districts
PESHAWAR (APP): Torrential rains swept through Peshawar on Tuesday night, inundating low-lying areas, and exposing gaps in the city’s drainage infrastructure.
The downpour, which began early Monday night and continued intermittently throughout this morning, led to waterlogging on major roads, causing severe traffic congestion in several parts of the provincial capital.
Commuters faced long delays as vehicles moved slowly through flooded streets, while motorcyclists struggled to navigate submerged roads.
Local authorities reported that emergency teams were deployed to clear blocked drains and assist residents in affected neighborhoods.
However, many areas remained submerged for hours, raising concerns among citizens about the preparedness of municipal services.
Residents of low-lying localities said rainwater entered homes and shops, damaging household items and business goods.
“This happens every time it rains heavily. The drainage system simply cannot cope,” said a local shopkeeper, Sajjad Ali expressing frustration over recurring flooding issues.
The Pakistan Meteorological Department had earlier forecast intermittent rain and thunderstorms in parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, warning of possible urban flooding in vulnerable areas.
Power outages were also reported in several feeders, adding to the difficulties faced by residents. Meanwhile, rescue officials urged citizens to avoid unnecessary travel and stay away from electric poles and flooded areas to prevent accidents.
Authorities have advised the public to remain cautious as more rain is expected in the coming days, with weather patterns indicating continued instability in the region.
The recent spell of rain, while bringing relief from rising temperatures, has once again highlighted the urgent need for improved urban planning and drainage systems in Peshawar.
Rains were also reported from Khyber, Charsadda and Nowshera.
