    President appeals Intl community to generously help floods affectees of Pakistan

    RISALPUR: President, Dr Arif Alvi here Wednesday appealed to the Pakistani nation and international community to generously help the flood affected people of Pakistan in their hour of tragedy.

    The President underlined the need for immediate payment of compensation to the bereaved families of the flood victims. During his visit to the flood affected camps established at Amangharh and Risalpur degree college here in Nowshera, the President urged philanthropists and volunteers to donate relief goods including cash and food items to registered reputable relief organizations and Pakistan red crescent society.

    He said that recent floods caused havoc in Khyber Pakthunkhwa, Balcohistan and Sindh provinces where about 700,000 livestock and standing crops on over two million acres of land were affected besides losses of precious lives and properties. Dr Alvi said that approximately over one million houses were damaged in the floods leaving hundreds of families displaced.

    He assured that all the resources would be utilized for rehabilitation and resettlement of the flood affectees in their respective areas, adding the nation would not leave the flood victims alone in this hour of trial and difficulty.

    The president stressed the need for speedy disbursement of financial aid among the victims through a comprehensive strategy and planning in an organized and transparent manner. He also stressed the need for construction of new dams in the country for storage of flood and rainy water to avoid floods in future.

    He said Pakistan’s contribution in emission of green house gases was very low while it fell prey to victim of global warming as result of excessive carbon emissions by the other countries. Dr Arif Alvi said that great responsibilities rest on the shoulders of the international community as well as the Pakistani nation to play their imperative role to counter the environmental changes and global warming through pragmatic measures.

    The president expressed grief and sorrow over the loss of 1,100 precious lives including 350 children in recent floods and expressed sympathies over 19,000 injured from the natural calamity.

    Earlier, the President was briefed about the floods and relief efforts during his visit to PAF Asghar Academy Risalpur. He was informed that the Academy had provided camp accommodation, food and medicines to over 2,000 displaced affectees.

    He was further informed that PAF had provided medical care to over 25,000 patients at PAF medical camps across the country while 175,000 dry food packets and over 1,000 tents were distributed among flood victims.

    The president appreciated the district administration and armed forces of Pakistan for their untiring efforts to provide relief to the flood victims.(APP)
